Home Knowledge Base Watches Buff out scratches on the case or bezel

We built your COURG from titanium, a metal that is exceptionally strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic. Titanium beats stainless steel any day (unless you need a good paperweight), but like any metal, titanium scratches.

No matter how careful you are, surface scratches on the case and bezel of your watch are bound to happen with every day action. A few little marks here and there shouldn’t matter, those are marks of character and emblems of your adventures and missions accomplished. Still, if those really irk you, it’s possible to buff and polish your watch if you must.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Before buffing wipe dry with a clean cloth to remove any dirt and grime.
  • Use clean and high quality polishing cloth specially designed for watches.
  • There are special DIY titanium buffing tools, and some have even suggested pen-erasers, but use those at your own risk.
  • Gently buff scratches on the case of your watch, starting with one that’s less obvious as a test.
  • Scratches in titanium are primarily in the oxidized layer and so when you buff the metal, you will uncover a lighter colored tone. Give it some time and the metal will re-oxidize.

If the scratches are deeply embedded, seeking the service of highly skilled craftsmen is the best option. Choose watchmakers with extensive training on removing those scratches using special equipment. These guys will know how to remove the movement, protect the sapphire crystal and lumed bezel marker, preserve the gaskets and use either sand-or-bead blasting to restore the finish.
